What to Expect During IPL Treatment

Each IPL session takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of areas treated. Dawn applies a cool gel before treatment and uses a handpiece that delivers controlled pulses of light across the skin.

1
Consultation & Skin Assessment
Dawn evaluates your skin tone, sun damage, and treatment goals. She confirms you are a good candidate based on your current sun exposure, skin type, and medical history. Free with every appointment.
2
Skin Prep
Arrive without makeup. Dawn cleanses the area and applies a cool gel to the skin before treatment begins. Protective eyewear is provided.
3
IPL Treatment (30 to 60 minutes)
The IPL handpiece delivers brief, bright pulses of light. The sensation is often described as rubber band snaps or quick zaps. Uncomfortable but well-tolerated. Comfort measures are provided throughout.
4
Immediate Aftercare & Results Timeline
You can resume normal activity right away. Skin will appear red and feel dry initially. Dark spots may temporarily look more pronounced as pigment surfaces before sloughing off over several days. Full results develop over 4 to 6 weeks per session.

Common Questions

IPL Photofacial FAQs

How much does IPL cost at Dandelion?
IPL packages of 3 treatments are priced by area: face $900, neck $600, décolleté $600. Combining areas saves money: 2 areas $1,200, 3 areas $1,500. A single spot treatment is $400. Free consultation is included.
How many treatments will I need?
A series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart is recommended. The package of 3 is the starting point for most patients. Dawn will assess your skin and advise on the right series length during your consultation based on the severity and type of discoloration.
Does IPL hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as rubber band snaps or brief zaps. It is uncomfortable but well-tolerated. Dawn provides comfort measures throughout the treatment. Sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of areas treated.
Why do my dark spots look worse after IPL?
This is a normal part of the process. IPL draws pigment to the surface of the skin. The spots will appear darker temporarily, resembling coffee grounds on the skin. They will slough off naturally over several days, revealing clearer skin underneath. Do not pick at or exfoliate the treated area during this period.
Can I get IPL if I have a tan?
No. Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin is not suitable for IPL treatment. The light targets pigment, and active tan increases the risk of burning or uneven results. You must avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your first session and throughout the entire series. This is one reason fall and winter are the ideal seasons.
Is there downtime after IPL?
You can return to normal activity immediately. Your skin will appear red and feel dry for a day or two. Dark spots will temporarily darken before sloughing off over several days. Daily sunscreen is required, and you should avoid retinol and exfoliants for at least 2 weeks after each session.
